In the new season Subu Vilo we would like to highlight its 'old' Long Shots series, where, in our opinion, the dialogue between film/video and visual art appears in a most articulated way. Long Shots shows one work uninterruptedly for one period. The work often has no beginning or end, or its duration is so expanded that one does not expect to see a beginning or an end. In fact a work in the Long Shots series is a video installation, which by being presented as single screen on a special wall in the space, stays closely connected with the original concept of cinema compared with video screenings in an exhibition space. It is specially the parameter 'time' which highlights the difference between installation and film. Where in the original idea of cinema time is artificially constructed in order tot create a different experience of it, in the Long Shots time often appears in its real dimensions by which, in the contrary, it is being dissolved. We all know the moving images that make us forget about time, like the waves of the sea or the flames of a fire, images that were also used in order to fill-in empty moments on television. In Sub urban we will not show images in order to fill in time, but we want to create the possibility for the visitor to be with and in the work as long as wanted, not being bothered by a storyline. We think that this is a gentle way of presenting these 'installations' in between the cinema and the white cube. When looking back, the series of Long Shots expresses in the most exact way the specific character of the Sub urban video lounge, a space where you can enjoy a coffee and look at the images as long as you want. Maybe we can say that the that we chose for the Long Shots series find their perfect situation in the video lounge, while at the same time the video lounge performs its full potential by showing those works. The Long Shots Series gives us the possibility to keep experimenting with the mental and physical aspects of film and cinema: concept, screening, projection space, visitors expectations and behaviour..... In the new season we will show new and old examples of works from this series. We start with a repeat of Group portrait 1 2005 by Karel Doing, an in-situ work which we think is a fine example of an artistic view on the characteristics of the video lounge, With regards, Toine Horvers and Kathrin Wolkowicz
