De Amerikaanse kunstenaar Phill Niblock (Indiana 1933) maakt films en
klankcomposities.
Als filmer heeft hij tijdens zijn vele reizen overal op de wereld mensen
gefilmd die fysiek ritmisch werk verrichten.
Zijn klankcomposities, in bezettingen die uiteenlopen van zangstem tot
groot kamerorkest, bestaan uit één aangehouden toon of
cluster van tonen, een radicale vorm van minimalisme die resulteert in
klankstromen met een rijkdom aan variaties en zwevingen.
Phill Niblock is al jaren directeur van Experimental Intermedia Foundation,
een klankkunst programma in zijn loft in New York dat sinds 1999 ook
een filiaal heeft in Gent.
Zijn jaarlijkse 'wintersolstice' concertserie in New York is inmiddels
een traditie geworden.
Hoogtepunt is Phill's eigen dag op 21 december waarop hij van 18.00 tot
24.00 uur ononderbroken zijn films vertoont op meerdere projectoren,
beamers en beeldschermen tegelijk en daarbij op hoog volume zijn muzikale
composities speelt.
De combinatie van ritmische werkhandelingen in de films met de ingehouden
energie van de klankcomposities creëert een monumentale situatie,
die buiten op Grand Street al waarneembaar is.
Sub-urban vertoont nu Phill Niblocks film 'China '88' begeleid door een
keuze van zijn muzikale werk.

The American artist Phill Niblock (Indiana
1933) makes films and sound compositions.
As a filmmaker he made - during many travels - shots of people doing
rhythmic physical work.
His sound compositions - composed of different combinations of instruments
ranging from voice to large chamber orchestra - consist of one extended
tone or cluster of tones.
This radical form of minimalism however, results in streams of sounds,
which are rich of variations and irregularities.
Since many years Phill Niblock is the director of Experimental Intermedia
Fd., a sound-art program in Phill's loft in New York with a European
version in Gent since 1999.
Highpoint in his annual 'winter solstice' consert series in New York
is his own day on the 21st of December, where from 6 till 12 am he projects
his films via various projectors, beamers and screens together with his
musical works played on high volume.
The combination of the rhythmic daily work movements in the films and
the held back energy of the sounds creates a monumental situation that
already can be noticed outside the loft on Grand Street.
