Geert van Mil en Doris Denekamp: The Big Smoke 2009
Geert and Doris filmed the projection of a famous film. The Big Sleep from 1946 is a striking example of Film Noir. The artists projected the film through an unregular curtain of smoke, thus sometimes catching the images, sometimes just missing them. Fragments of faces and interiors loom op from the smoke and desintegrate again. The dark smokey atmosphere of the Film Noir is here expressed in its essence.
It is a strange concept to film the projection of a film straight in the direction of its projector: there is always the bright spot of the projector lamp which is constantly moving and spreading its beams like a mysterious star in the centre of the frame.
