De Amerikaanse schrijver/dichter/beeldend kunstenaar George Quasha werkt sinds enkele jaren aan het doorlopende video-project Art is.
Hij nodigt kunstenaars van verschillende disciplines uit om voor de camera hun definitie van kunst te geven.
Sommigen hebben daar slechts enkele woorden voor nodig, anderen wijden minutenlang uit over hun idee van wat kunst is.
Het consept is helder en streng uitgevoerd: geen aankondigingen, geen camerabewegingen, enkel die prachtige sprekende portretten tegen een witte achtergrond.
Tegelijk heeft het gegeven ook iets ironisch, als je bedenkt hoeveel discussies over kunst zijn vastgelopen op het moment dat de vraag 'wat is kunst' erin kwam.
Het is alsof 'Art is' voor eens en voor altijd wil duidelijk maken dat er geen eensluidende definitie voor dat ding 'Kunst' bestaat. Of liever: niet voor eens, maar steeds weer, en steeds weer door anderen....

The American author/poet/visual artist, has worked for a number of years on an on going video project 'Art is'.
He invites artists from various disciplines to sit before a video camera and give their difinition of art.
Some of the participants only need a few words, while others give a longer convoluted account of what art is.
The consept is clear and precise: no announcements, no camera-effects, there are only those beautiful talking portraits in front of a white background, one after the other.
On the other hand the project appears somewhat ironically to me when I think of how many discussions on art have been shipwrecked when the subject 'what is art?' came into play.
It is as if 'Art is ' for once and for always wants to say that there is no clear objective definition for this thing called art. Or better: not for once, but again and again by others....
